The Legend of Zawiya Ahansal

Pilgrims gather at the grave of Sidi Said Ahansal in Zawiya Ahansal.

Zawiya Ahansal was founded in the 12th century by Sidi Said Ahansal, a traveling  Amazigh Islamic scholar. Local legend states that Sidi Said Ahansal’s mentor told him to stop his travels and establish a religious school where his cat jumped off his donkey. Sidi Said Ahansal established the first permanent habitation in the region. His descendants still live in Zawiya Ahansal today and oversee the zawiya’s traditions.
